Inspired by the rich tradition of special lightweight Porsche road cars, the R further distils Theon Design’s signature recipe, sympathetically enhancing and relentlessly honing the 964 platform to deliver the purest, most exhilarating analogue Porsche driving experience.
It’s the Theon take on the ultimate, lightweight air-cooled 911 road car.
The Theon R is designed to deliver a visceral, immediate driving experience like no other. Key to this is an extensive programme of lightweighting, which ensures that the R weighs in at under 1000kg with all fluids on board. Light, but super-strong carbonfibre is used throughout – for the interior and all body panels, including the doors – developed from the ground up with an F1 composites supplier. As with all Theon builds, each carbon panel is digitised and modelled in CAD to ensure a perfect fit.
The R’s lightweight shell has modern levels of rigidity thanks to a comprehensive course of seam welding, as well as the addition of Theon’s innovative carbon tubs, which are bonded to the chassis, dramatically improving torsional strength without adding weight.
Power comes from the most extreme incarnation yet of Theon’s signature 4.0-litre air-cooled flat six, which features a 24-valve, dual overhead cam cylinder head and four valves per cylinder. The stunning powerplant revs to over 9,000 rpm and puts out 500+bhp – more than 125bhp per litre – while also producing over 400Nm of torque. It combines a ferocious top end rush with effortless in-gear flexibility, while emitting a sound akin to that of a ‘70s RSR race car.
The flat-six drives the rear wheels through a short throw, six-speed manual ‘box and a Wavetrac limited-slip-diff. With a power-to-weight ratio of more than 500bhp per ton – the R packs a better power-to-weight ratio than any production 911; it can accelerate to 60mph from rest in 3 seconds and 100mph in just 6.5 seconds.
The R takes the dynamic ability of the Theon-enhanced 964 platform to new heights thanks to the use of a bespoke, fully adjustable Motion Control Suspension (MCS) system. This state-of-the-art package deploys the same technology used in multiple Porsche global racing series. Thanks to a carefully tailored MCS 3W damper – developed specifically for the R – the car possesses unrivalled depth, and breadth, of dynamic ability.
The MCS system enables the R to devour twisty tarmac, from European mountain passes to Californian canyons, yet its wide range of adjustability means it can also be tuned for track use, becoming a super tied-down circuit machine at the twist of a dial.
